come on Miss Cedar let’s get your weight
oh you can’t cheat like that I’m sorry
you have to be all the way on there’s a
couple possibilities that can cause a
big swelling in the neck of a dog and
you know one is an abscess so chewing
sticks or some foreign body gets in
there in an abscess forms 96 yikes how
are we gonna lift you on the table
you’re a little chocolate unfortunately
it could also be a tumor
feels kind of hard actually
it looks to be like bilateral like on
both sides and it’s really odd to have
an abscess on both sides of her neck
before I do anything to this poor dog’s
throat I need to try to figure out what
is this mysterious swelling
yeah
so the first step is using ultrasound
because I want to try to look at
what does that swelling look like on the
inside
found some sound waves in there and then
give me a picture
try to hold her real still okay
she doesn’t like it
so when I’m looking with ultrasound into
this swelling and I’m trying to figure
out was it just one big pocket of fluid
is there stuff floating around in there
is it solid tissue maybe more like a
tumor foreign
[Music]
they look kind of chambered which yeah
so that looks like an abscess freeze
that thanks so do you see how it’s got
like different chambers in it I think
this top that is actually salivary gland
and that’s abscessed let’s just wear
this on both sides of our neck oh
interesting that’s not really common
that you get an abscess where it’s
swelling on both sides
maybe it’s one big one like a tracked
over yeah maybe the things that can
trick you though are that you can have a
the tumor grows and it outgrows its blood
supply and then it starts to get a dead
center like kind of necrotic like a dead
center and that can look like an abscess
when you get that giant of an abscess
huh cancer could possibly be on both
sides especially the thyroid which is
right there you can have big lymph nodes
that get swollen as well
yeah we’ll definitely have to look at
more clues to try to diagnose this but I
really hope it’s not a cancerous growth
because that would be a very serious
situation for Cedar for it to be
abscesses is
alternative so I hope that that holds up
let me poke that chamber there let me
get the needle and stuff and we’ll get a
sample since I’ve found a good pocket
I’m going to go ahead and put a needle
in there and take out some of that fluid
to see if we can figure out what it is
you can see the needle tip right there
that white dot see me moving it yeah
trying to get a little bit deeper into
the abscess I don’t think I have a long
enough needle oh but I do
so you can see I got some fluid
okay so that was definitely on the left
side of the trachea for that one I want
to check to see if this is like saliva
or if it’s like an abscess and put on
some gloves and play with a little bit
you can kind of tell sometimes by the
consistency through touching it looking
at it is it kind of like sticky and
ropey like saliva or is it stinky like
an abscess or you know what is it like
this is just more like real liquidy more
like an abscess
it looks really watery which is much
more like an abscess it’s been going on
for a while wait look at it is it also
solidifier
[Music]
is that now the fluid has been sitting
in the kidney dish for a few minutes now
and it started to congeal into like a
jelly it’s really gross
that looks really strange it didn’t
start out like that it was total liquid
why I want to stain these and look into
the microscope as well so I’m trying to
convince myself is that like a salivary
kind of Chunk or is that a clot of just
red blood cells first thing that strikes
me is I don’t see a lot of cells those
are red blood cells these kind of like
ghosty looking things
but if this was an abscess
which is still might be I would expect
to see a lot more of a type of white
blood cells that have a different kind of
nucleus called neutrophil and I’m not
seeing it
so looking at the slide I’m not finding
a Smoking Gun
yeah just it’s just so a cellular
it’s a little bit of conflicting
information unfortunately
I just don’t know
oh
